If your wish in coming to France is to taste delicious food and wine, Aix en Provence will not let you down. The town is alive, not only with restaurants and cafes, but with historic food speciality shops that have maintained their first-class reputations and traditions for hundreds of years. Even in this age of apparent supermarket domination, here you will see regular customers crowding into these shops in search of the best food products. The foodie experience on this tour will delight your taste buds whilst giving you a fascinating insight to the whole culture of food, it’s preparation and it’s enjoyment here in Provence.
Most French home cooks rely on their butcher, traiteur (hot meals), fishmonger, and fromagerie (cheese shop) for parts of their meals, and they will order exquisite cakes and tarts from their favourite patisserie for dessert. Tastes of Provence will take you to some of these purveyors of fine food as we stroll the elegant streets of Aix en Provence, absorbing some of its fun history.
This tour will also take in the daily farmers’ market where the freshest and most delicious fruits and vegetables are on glorious display. We will stop for a coffee at a traditional roastery, absorbing the colorful sights and sounds of life in the square as it has been lived for hundreds of years.
Having enjoyed the historic medieval quarter of Aix, we will save the best for (almost) last, visiting the most ancient of craftspeople, the fromager. You will be bewildered by the range of cheeses displayed in his tiny shop and the numbers of customers crowding in.
We will finish our morning in a small apartment, relaxing with a wine and cheese pairing and tasting fresh fruits and vegetables bought in the market. This light lunch will give you a good illustration of the « art de vivre a la française« .
If you are delighted by food you will enjoy this French culinary adventure, experienced in this ancient city whose spirit and heritage we will passionately introduce you to.
