Food Market Tour What a wonderful experience. Mathilde was so knowledgeable. It was cool to see the shops and merchants she uses for her cooking school. She was great about pacing things to fit our large group of ten. The food sampling was fabulous and it was great to hear the story behind the food. My only suggestion is skip or plan a light lunch after because you will be full.

Fun and informative tour of the Aix en Provence market We had a wonderful tour of the Aix en Provence market with Mathilde. She was fun and knowledgeable and we had tastes of some great local food, along with interesting information about the area. She gave us some tips on finding true local produce and merchandise at the market, which we used while shopping in the days that followed. This was our fourth time to Aix en Provence, but Mathilde really added depth to our knowledge of the area. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone planning to be in the area.

Knowledgeable, enthusiastic and delicious treats. Jennifer took us around some of the old town of Aix and explained some of the history which was very interesting and insightful, especially when it involves food! It is interesting hearing some of the food etiquette that the French follow in contrast to the British. She is passionate about the food produced in the area and has a very good relationship with the producers you meet. You get to taste the seasonal produce as well as some of the local delicacies. Highly recommended!

Great tour Great tour with our guide Matilda. It was a wonderful way to get oriented to this special city. We had many opportunities to taste a variety of foods. Each tasting was accompanied by fantastic descriptions from our guide. She knew many of the local vendors which was really nice. We also had a delicious wine tasting. Matilda knew so much history, even the date that the Rotunda fountain was built!!

Just fabulous! Loved everything about the 3 hour tour myself and a friend did on 19 July. It was great getting to know a bit about the history of Aix. The food sampling was fabulous and we now know what makes the difference between a white and green asparagus and black and green olives!! Would highly recommend this as a great introduction (and orientation) of Aix.

A True "Taste" of Provence in Aix My family joined Janicke on this tour covering the history of Aix en Provence and sampling the local flavors at the markets and various food shops. This was a hit with everyone in the family and Janicke did an excellent job detailing the histories behind places we saw and also incorporating the food that we sampled into the narrative. This was also a great way to find amazing food to bring back home from Provence. Really excellent.

If you’ve travelled to France to taste delicious food and wine, Aix en Provence will be a dream come true.  The town is alive, not only with restaurants and cafés, but with historic food speciality shops and farmers markets that have maintained their first-class reputations and traditions for hundreds of years.  Even in this age of apparent supermarket domination, here you will see regular customers crowding into these shops and markets in search of the best food products. The foodie experience on this Farmers Market & Food Shop tour will delight your taste buds whilst giving you a fascinating insight to the whole culture of food, it’s preparation and its enjoyment here in Provence. You’ll also learn plenty of local history, as we explain how Aix en Provence’s aristocratic population has created such a demand for fine food purveyors.

Most French home cooks rely on their butcher, traiteur (hot meals), fishmonger, and fromagerie (cheese shop) for parts of their meals, and they will order exquisite cakes and tarts from their favorite patisserie for dessert.  Your hosts, Mathilde and Jennifer, will take you to some of these purveyors of fine food as we stroll the elegant streets of Aix en Provence, tasting pastries, macarons, candied fruits and absorbing some of its fascinating history on a truly locals’ tour.

This culinary tour will also take in the 700 year old daily market square where the freshest and most delicious fruits and vegetables are on glorious display. We will show you what’s in season, how to choose ingredients and how to cook with them. We will meet local farmers selling different varieties of produce, such as strawberries or old-fashioned tomatoes, all harvested that morning. We will taste goat’s cheese, hams, honey, olives, and plenty of other surprises, all while experiencing the gorgeous smells coming from cooked food merchants. You will live like a local, absorbing the colorful sights and sounds of this iconic marketplace as it has been lived for hundreds of years.

You will also enjoy a well deserved drink stop, either for an artisanal French coffee at a traditional roastery or a glass of rosé wine from our favorite wine specialist.  These are both consumed at small family owned shops, so according to their schedule, we will make the best plan!

As the morning concludes with an introduction to the region’s iconic rosé wine, you will come away having experienced the happy atmosphere of a market day in Provence, along with all its tastes and smells, as well as a real insider’s visit of this astonishingly beautiful town.

This Food Tour includes:

  • Several sweet and savory tastings in the farmers markets and in historic food purveyors, as described above, over 3 hours
  • A stop for artisanal coffee/hot chocolate OR rosé wine
  • Entertaining overview of the history of the town
  • A copy of the exclusive Foodies’ Guide to Aix en Provence, packed with tips for dining, drinking and shopping.

Tour details:

  • Wear shoes comfortable for walking on cobblestone streets
  • Tours run rain or shine (though it is most likely to shine in Aix en Provence!)
  • A confirmation and meeting point details will be emailed to you upon reservation
